Talk Like a Pirate 2015

Event Description

Mateys …it wer a great success, this coming-together of scurvy dogs and knife-wielding lasses!  Capt’n Pearse rolled the pirate tunes on to Radio Riel’s airways, and lessoned the crew on their history.  Miss Myomy ran a tight ship, what with all the vote-counting and refusing of bribes.  And those dead what could attend, left some rum for the living!  Until next year,  weigh anchor and hoist the mizzen!

The NeoLondon Times ~ Volume 20

A dull thud on the doorstep in the early morning announces the newspaper delivery automaton making his rounds.  Its reed-and-brass voice box calls out in the pre-dawn silence, echoing down the cobblestone streets.  “Wake up to the News in the Times!  Advertisements and Entertainment, too!”

PRESS RELEASE

 5 September 2015

The NeoVictoria Project presents “The Bewitched Carnival”.

Five evenings of non-stop roleplay, celebrating the NeoVictoria Project’s fifth year in Second Life!

This series of roleplay events begins on Monday, 21 September 2015, with a harvest festival that will feature a traveling carnival of the mostly-dead, and a very traditional wickerman.  Everyone is invited to roleplay with us!

SLUrl: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/NeoVictoria/17/128/1004

In NeoVictoria, we do free-form dark roleplay.  Free-form means there is no script; scenes evolve out of real-time character interactions.  Dark roleplay means characters may act in aggressive, predatory, criminal and/or plain uncomfortable ways.  We use a simple dice-based wearable HUD called the Jade Kreations Role Play Tool Suite; avatars must wear this to see the roleplay chat.  The item is free and available in our Visitor Center,  various locations on our out-of-character skymall, and the SecondLife Marketplace.

Players don’t have to be a member of our group to roleplay here; we do ask newcomers take a tour of the Visitor Center in NeoVictoria SIM to learn about the storyworld before joining in the roleplay.  [Observer tags are also available for players who want to visit the land level, but not roleplay.]

A Repost of “The User’s Guide to Steampunk”

Back in 2008, the GOGBOT Festival focused on Steampunk, and for their website Bruce Sterling wrote a landmark thought-piece on what Steampunk is.

Poster from the 2008 GOGBOT Event

That post very much informed Asil’s thinking, when they were developing The NeoVictoria Project. Here’s one of their favorite sections:

“Frankly, the heaviest guys in the steampunk scene are not really all that into “steam.” Instead, they are into punk. Specifically, punk’s do-it-yourself aspects and its determination to take the means of production away from big, mind-deadening companies who want to package and sell shrink-wrapped cultural product.”

GOGBOT recently took their 2008 site off-line, which was a loss to the project, as we would direct people to that essay when they asked us “what kind of Steampunk” we believed in. So, we reached out to Professor Sterling for permission to re-post it here.  And, very graciously, he gave us the nod.  Thank you, Professor!

We have the repost set as a page on the main side-bar of this site.  Here’s the direct link: http://neovictoria.tv/main/steampunk/the-users-guide-to-steampunk/. If you’ve never read it, this is your chance. If it’s been awhile, enjoy a re-read.  We’ll leave you with a final quote:

The past is a kind of future that has already happened.

Our ParcelAbout NeoVictoria’s Exhibit

The NeoVictoria Project with its live action simulation on the Second Life platform is a unique dark roleplay environment crafted with a Steampunk aesthetic. The goal of the project is to create a self-sustaining cycle where roleplay becomes filmed story.

The build is based on a plot from our roleplay. Miss Ticka, the proprietress of the tavern, has sent her magic portrait of the Sidhe queen back to Old Earth for servicing.  During transport, negligent portal imps dropped its crate from their dirigible.  It crashed to ground, along with a crate of mirrors and books; now the magic has escaped, causing the land to lift and the mirrors to capture some of the recordings the portrait had made.

Credits:  Fianah Mistwood built the set.  Asil Ares and Crosswired Deanimator created some of the textures.  Fianah Mistwood made “{BHC} The Queens  Mirror” gift.  myomy Resident and Jhaesoph Foxdale made the “NeoVictoria Greeting HUD SL12B Edition FP” gift.

About Celestials

In human mythology, worlds are lost (or won) through acts of cowardice and valor.  And failures may be overcome through acts of atonement.

In the Neo’verse, there is one race whose actions led to the destruction of the ancient order.  Those who remain now do eternal penance for their perceived malfeasance.  If there were angels in the Neo’Verse, they would these creatures.

In the Sidhe Empire, we find three kinds of Celestials.

  • The Ophanim (wandering warriors and scribes),
  • The  Fylgjur (parents and guardians),
  • and the Nephilim (hybrids).

To learn more about our winged humanoids read the abridged version of  “The Celestial Concordance posted to this site, join the community website or wander the Visitor’s Center in-world for a wearable book.
