NeoVictoria Roleplay Tool (NRT)

NeoVictoria uses a home-grown device called the NeoVictoria Roleplay Tool (NRT).  This wearable object includes a simple titler, a variety of dice-types, and special chat-channels.  It’s free and we do periodic trainings on its use. Its creator, Jhaesoph Foxdale , is a member of the NeoVictoria Roleplay Group.

USER’S GUIDE

Overview

To facilitate the roleplay in NeoVictoria, we’ve developed a simple free wearable object called the “NeoVictoria Roleplay Tool (NRT)” which allows the player to create unique names for their characters, offers chat-options in terms of what other players can see when that character speaks, and includes a variety of dice.

This tool was developed by the members of the NeoVictoria Roleplay group and scripted by Jhaesoph Foxdale.  The object is copy/transfer, and may be acquired by touching the many giver-objects we have staged throughout the Skymall on Machinima SIM, and the Visitor Center on NeoVictoria SIM.

Quick Start

  1. Wear the “NeoVictoria Roleplay Tool (NRT)
  2. Set your character’s name by typing into local (or nearby) chat,
    /9name <YOUR CHARACTER NAME>
(Don’t include the caret <> symbols and don’t make YOUR CHARACTER NAME the same as your SL default avatar name, i.e. if your SL avatar name was Asil Resident you might call your character The Clockwerk Doll.
  3. Start roleplaying by typing /411 in local for your roleplay chat; all avatars wearing the “NeoVictoria Roleplay Tool (NRT)” will be able to see it.

Understanding the Tool

When your avatar wears this object, you can chat as your character using the standard SL chat commands, plus use two special channels developed specifically for our roleplay.

All chat commands must be typed into the local, or (Nearby chat), field in your viewer’s CONVERSATIONS window to work.

When worn, the object puts hover-text above your avatar’s head, the top line is for the character’s name and the bottom line is for sharing information about the character.  When tapped, or when the /9menu command is used, the object gives a standard pop-up dialog window, with a variety of buttons which allow you to change the character name, title, color of the hover text, and to access assorted dice.

Not every action needs to be played with dice.  The dice tool is here to use as needed. However, once a player uses the dice, all the players in the scene are bound by the throw.

IMPORTANT: To roleplay in NeoVictoria, your avatar must wear the roleplay tool; no exceptions.

What the Buttons Do

  • Dice – Opens a second window that lists the nine dice-types; use this if you only want avatars within 20 meters of your avatar to be able to see the results.
  • Estate Dice – Opens a second window that lists the nine dice-types; use this if you want any avatar on the Estate that is wearing the tool to see the results.
  • Toggle Size – Allows you to change the shape of the tool from a tiny gear to a large cube.  Since the wearable will react to touch, sizing up to a large cube makes clicking the tool easier.
  • Set Name – Opens a pop-up window you can type in where you write your character’s name.
  • Set Title – Opens a pop-up window you can type in where you can share some information about your character.
  • Text Color – Opens a pop-up window with buttons for the standard colors, tap these to change the color of the hover text.  Click the Custom button if you want to use your own special color.
  • HELP – Gives player a notecard with this User’s Guide.
  • Ignore – Closes the pop-up window without making any changes.
  • Block – Will stop your avatar from seeing messages from the object.  Do NOT tap this button or the tool will stop working for you.

TIP: To UNBLOCK an object, from the SL viewer menu, go to Communicate > Block List. A window will open.  Go to the BLOCKED tab, highlight and r-click on the object, choose UNBLOCK.

Setting Your Character’s Name / Chat Name

In NeoVictoria, we like to play a variety of characters, often on the same avatar.  Our roleplay tool makes applying a character’s name easy!  Once you have the character’s name set, any local chat you make using the /2, /411 or /911 chat commands will reference the character’s name, not your default SL avatar name or SL display name.

On first wear, the object defaults to your default SL avatar user-name and the title text reads “This avatar is a visitor; please ignore this avatar ICly.”  We do this so players who are only visiting may observe the roleplay OOCly.

  • Wear the “NeoVictoria Roleplay Tool (NRT)”
  • Set your character’s name by typing “/9menu” in local;
  • Selecting the SET NAME button, type the name of the character into the resulting pop-up and click SUBMIT to save the change.

IMPORTANT:  Give your character(s) a name which is different from your default SL avatar name (that’s the name you created when you originally signed up for SecondLife).  For example, if your SL avatar name was Asil, you might call your character “The Clockwerk”.

Alternately, you can set the character name using the /9name chat command. Type into the local (Nearby chat) window:
/9name <YOUR CHARACTER NAME>
(Don’t include the caret <> symbols)

Setting your Character’s Status/Title

Not everyone sees the environment the same way; sometimes avatars don’t render properly, or players are focusing on the chat, so may not notice if you’ve got your avatar wearing bruise makeup, or have it smoking a cigar.  The status/title hover-text can be used to share this information OOCly, so the other players don’t miss it!  Here’s an example: “Walks with a limp and has a glass eye.”  [Arghhh!]

  • Wear the “NeoVictoria Roleplay Tool (NRT)”
  • Set your character’s status by typing “/9menu” in local;
  • Selecting the SET TITLE button, type the information into the resulting pop-up and click SUBMIT to save the change.

Alternately, you can set the character status using the /9title chat command. Type into the local (Nearby chat) window:
/9name <YOUR CHARACTER’S STATUS INFORMATION>
(Don’t include the caret <> symbols)

Role Playing

In Second Life, our chat can be seen in the local chat window by all nearby because it all goes over an open channel, which has the number 0.  Often, in scripts, different objects need to exchange information or coordinate their behavior.  One way to do that is to have them chat on a different channel known to all of them. All the scripts that are listening on that channel will hear whatever is said on that channel, up to various distance restrictions.

Local Roleplay Chat

In NeoVictoria, when you want to limit who can see what your character is saying to within 100 meters of its location, this roleplay chat is done using channel 2, or “/2” in the local (or nearby) chat window.  Below is are the special notations for chatting in different ways (or ranges).

  • /2w – whisper as your character (10 meters)
  • /2m or /2me – Emote as your character (20 meters)
  • /2 <text> – Speak normally as your character (20 meters)
  • /2s – Shout as your character (100 meters)

Example: If you wanted your character to whisper to another character with 10 meters of their position, you would type into local chat:

/2w I’m whispering this to you, as I don’t want them to hear me!
and we would see in local:
The Clockwerk: I’m whispering this to you, as I don’t want them to hear me!

Event Roleplay Chat

Often, our avatars aren’t within 20 meters of each other, but we are all engaged in active roleplay together.  This makes the 10/20/100 meter distance restrictions on local chat unworkable.  To address this, we have a broadcasting chat channel using /411<text> that, when triggered, allows any avatar anywhere in the estate to see the roleplay chat.  Most of our roleplay uses this /411 broadcast channel.

  • Type /411[SPACE] into the local channel, then type your roleplay chat and tap the ENTER button.
  • In local, as YELLOW text, anyone wearing the NeoVictoria Roleplay Tool will see your character chat that phrase anywhere in the SIMs, i.e. The Clockwerk: This is roleplay chat using channel 411, anyone wearing the NRT should see it.

OOC Event Chat

Players may broadcast out-of-character (OOC) chat to other players in-SIM using /911<text>. This can be useful for synchronizing the action, advising you need to go AFK, or alerting other players to a technical issue. Be frugal with this feature; do not spam your fellow players with unnecessary OOC chatter, as that kills immersion.

  • Type /911[SPACE] into the local channel, then type your OOC information, and tap the ENTER button.
  • In local, as GREEN text, anyone wearing the HUD will see your SL AVATAR chat that phrase anywhere in the SIMs, i.e. asil.ares playing as The Clockwerk: RL phone; going AFK, skip me for now.

Changing Text Color

The default color for the hover-text the tool uses is white.  However, it’s nice to be able to personalize that, and having different colored text makes it easier to tell what float text is assigned to which avatar.

  • Type /9menu, then tap the TEXT COLOR button.
  • Next, tap the button for the color you want to use.
  • If you want to craft your own color, using the LSL Color vectors (http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Category:LSL_Color), type /9menu, then tap the TEXT COLOR button
  • Click the CUSTOM button.
  • A new window appears, enter your specialized color <NUMBER,NUMBER,NUMBER> value (DO include the caret <> symbols).

IMPORTANT: Don’t make the color of your hover-text black or another dark color.  People need to be able to read it!

Updates

Whenever your avatar wears the NeoVictoria Roleplay Tool, it will reach-out to our in-world server.  If there has been an update, the server will offer you an new version of the object.  Please accept this object and delete any older version you might have in your inventory.

TIP:  Keep a notecard with your character’s names and titles in your inventory.  That way, when you need to reconfigure your roleplay tool, you won’t have to remember what you called them!

Dice

To utilize the dice, you can tap the tool to open the button-menu, or use chat-shortcuts to trigger the dice. We have two forms of the dice, one that can be used with local chat, and another that should be used with the estate-broadcast roleplay chat.

Local Dice

When roleplaying using the /2 chat commands, use the local version of the dice.

  • Type /9menu, then tap the DICE button.
  • A new window with nine dice buttons appears: d12; d20; d100; d6; d8; d10; coin/d2; d3; d4. D=dice, the number = the number of sides to the die, so d12 is a 12-sided die.
  • Tap the die you want to throw.
  • In local, in GREEN text, you’ll see the alert where your character’s name is associated with the roll-result, i.e.: The Clockwerk rolled a 12-sided die, and got a 9.  This chat can be seen by avatars within 20 meters of your avatar.

Alternately, you can use a shortened method of rolling the die via the local (nearby) chat field. Type /9d[DICE TYPE], here are the shortcuts: /9d2, /9d4, /9d6, /9d8, /9d10, /9d12, /9d20, /9d100.

Estate Dice

When using the /411 roleplay chat command, if you need to roll-dice, you want everyone on the estate to be able to see the result.  With that in view, we created a version of the dice that, when triggered, can be seen by anyone wearing the tool

  • Type /9menu, then tap the ESTATE DICE button.
  • A new window with nine dice buttons appears: d12; d20; d100; d6; d8; d10; coin/d2; d3; d4. D=dice, the number = the number side to the die, so d12 is a 12-sided die.
  • Tap the die you want to throw.
  • In local, in YELLOW text, you’ll see the alert where your character’s name is associated with the roll-result, i.e.: The Clockwerk rolled a 12-sided die, and got a 9.  This chat can be seen by all avatars wearing the tool, regardless of their location on the SIMs.

NOTE: There are no shortcuts for the Estate dice.

Abridged Dice Rules

[Excerpted from Notecard 8. NeoVictoria Dice Rules]

+ Our Simple Dice Rules

1) Not every action needs to be played with dice.
2) Emote the OOC alert ((Rolling DICE for outcome) if you plan to throw dice.
3) The attacker throws dice,
4) The defender roleplays the outcome
5) When in combat, the character being attacked always gets the next turn.

  1. Not every action needs to be played with dice.

The tool is here to use as needed. However, once a player uses the dice, all the players in the scene are bound by the throw.

  1. Emote the OOC alert ((Rolling DICE for outcome)) if you plan to throw dice.

As a player, you want to give the other people in the scene a head’s up that a dice roll is coming.

Example:
[Asil Clockwerk] eyes the toymaker, taking his measure. She loosens the dagger at her side and faces him, “That’s a lovely purse ya got on your belt, spare some change for a poor girl?” She moves close, meaning to cut the leather purse from his belt. ((Rolling DICE for outcome))

  1. The attacker throws dice,

Example:
((Asil Clockwerk has rolled a 100 sided die, the result of which is 6))

  1. The defender RPs the outcome of the dice throw.

Example:
[Jhaesoph Foxdale] sees the glint of the blade and jumps back, avoiding Asil’s pathetic foray into purse-snatching.

  1. When dice are used for combat, the character being attacked always gets the next turn.

Players then trade turns/rolls until the scene concludes.

Example:
[Jhaesoph Foxdale] attempts to kick the knife out of Asil’s hand and into a nearby grate. ((Rolling DICE for outcome.))
((Jhaesoph Foxdale has rolled a 100 sided die, the result of which is 59.))
[Asil Clockwerk] feels the toymaker’s boot connect with the blade as it spun on to the ground.

[Asil Clockwerk] scrambles to her knees, cursing the man and her foul luck. She lunges toward the knife, desperate to pick it back up. ((Rolling DICE for outcome.))
((Asil Clockwerk has rolled a 100 sided die, the result of which is 19))
[Jhaesoph Foxdale] moves quickly and picks up the knife, sliding it into a pocket in his vest. Staring down at the foul-mouthed woman, “Do you really want to continue this, madam? With luck like yours, you are more likely to fall on your own blade than take anything of mine.”

[Asil Clockwerk] weighs her chances of getting her blade back and thinks better of it. “You were the lucky one this time, ducky. Maybe next time, things won’t go your way!” With that, she turns and runs from the alley.

  1. The higher the dice roll number, the greater the probability of success.

If you roll below 50% of what the dice can do, it’s a failed attempt; above 50% is a success. The higher the roll, the greater success the attempt has.
