Skyplatforms in NeoVictoria SIM

We Have Many Levels

The simulations in Second Life reach almost 5,000 meters.  Since the SL viewer has a maximum draw distance of 512 meters, that gives makers the option to create skyplatforms.  Last year, the Lab added the ability to change the environmental settings at different elevations.  For the project,  that meant that we were able to create new planets at different elevations, or new locations to our characters’ homeworld of planet NeoVictoria.

Below are the current platforms and a little about each location.  All are 360-degree panorama (equirectangular) snapshots were taken using  SL Viewer 6.4.23.563579 – Second Life Project 360 Capture.

The pictures are currently hosted on the Flickr platform because it has the ability to support the 360-degree effect.  Click the photo to open a new tab that allows an interactive engagement.

The Visitor Center and Skymall

Here are the first places players visit when they teleport to the estate.  It’s out-of-character (OOC) and offers information on what folks need to begin roleplaying with us.

The Port City of NeoLondon [the landlevel]

This is the main roleplay area.  We have made a lot of additions to create the effect of a port city surrounded by rolling hills.  On this planet, the light is cast by the moon.  It is a twilight world.  The NeoVictoria SIM has free character rentals and the Machinima SIM has pay-for rentals.

NeoLondon Junkyard and Skyship Port

This is the shipyard, Skyport, and junkyard for NeoLondon.

NeoLondon Fairgrounds and Forest

A favorite place to celebrate the solstices, this location also has extensive forests, secret caves, and sacred trees.

Letwick, Planet NeoEdinburgh

Colonized by people from the highlands of Scotland on Old Earth, NeoEdinburgh is an ocean world with few large landmasses, but thousands of tiny islands.

Strand War Memorial, Planet Greenwell

This planet was almost completely destroyed at the end of the Strand War. This sector of the city has been left as it was at the end of the war and now acts as a museum and memorial to the struggle.

What’s Ahead in the Coming Months of 2021

Join the Project’s Upcoming Events

We have exciting events planned for the coming months!  Some are in-character (IC) roleplay events, while others are out-of-character (OOC) parties.

Everyone is invited!  If you have questions or want to learn more, send us a note via this website or IM Asil Ares in-world.

A Search in New Ledwick (IC)

The captain and the soul-caster lead the NeoLondoners on a search for a missing soul cage.  Come play a townsfolk!  We are roleplaying this through the end of August.

Talk Like a Pirate! (OOC)

Saturday, 19 September 2021 at 6 PM
A celebration marking the NeoVictoria Project’s eleventh year in Second Life!  This live radio event, broadcast on Radio Nightingale’s Steampunk channel, will celebrate “International Talk Like A Pirate Day”.  There will be prizes for best in male and female costumes! Argh!!!

Play a victim or play to find a cure!

The Nightmare (IC)

20 September to 30 September
Every year we do a special roleplay cycle to celebrate our anniversary.  This year, we’ll be ELEVEN years old!  Look for many days of roleplay revolving around a terrible sickness that starts in the mind and ends …well, join us and see!

Photo Contest (OOC)

Begins 15 October and ends 15 November
Open to everyone in Second Life, images must be created in the NeoVictoria estate and relate to our storyworld.  The top ten photographers will receive Lindens!  The winners will be announced on Halloween.

Spend a spooky night in the skyclub.

Halloween Extravaganza 11 (OOC)

31 October
In association with Radio Nightingale, NeoVictoria is having a Halloween Costume bash to celebrate one of our favorite holidays. Radio Nightingale will broadcast the event over their main channel and we’ll have a costume party in the NeoVictoria Skyclub with a steampunk theme.  Dress your avatar in scary Steampunk, Victorian, Mecha, or Goth style and join us in Machinima SIM.

Bonfire Night Masquerade 8 (IC)

5 November
To celebrate the 533rd anniversary of Guy Fawkes Day, the city of NeoLondon plans a gala event.   Mr. Fawkes was a famous shapeshifter who used his skills to amass gunpowder (and it was rumored there were other fell objects) beneath the parliament building in 1605.  In imitation of Guy, don masks, change your shape and hair, disguise your voice (or rp style) and join in the frivolity.

Clockwerk Gala 6 (IC)

11 November
Often sponsored by local veteran associations, “Clockwerk Galas” are very popular affairs, serving as fund-raisers and recruitment.  The most amazing is held every Fall in Old London on Old Earth, it runs a fortnight with the oldest houses vying to raise the most money with fantastical parties and auctions.  The “Royal Clockwerk Ball” closes the festivities; its held in Buckingham Slithen and all the Court attends.  Here the most valiant of the year’s warriors are awarded the Sidhe Cross.

Yuletide Ball 8 (IC)

21 December
Our traditional end-of-year IC celebration.  As ever, tied to the actual Winter solstice!

Lots of roleplay happens that’s not planned, or only planned a week in advance, so join our in-world group or public announcer for as-it-happens alerts!

Join Us for Our 24th TownHall

Please join us for an out-of-character town hall tomorrow (Friday, 20 August 2021)!  We’ll be discussing the September anniversary events and the state of the project.  We are doing two townhalls, the first for folks in the UK and EU, and the latter for the folks in the Americas.

NeoVictoria is Participating in the Steam XVI Hunt

It’s an 8 gift mini-hunt!

The only Victorian Steampunk-themed grid-wide hunt in SecondLife is produced by Historical Hunts.  This is our 11th year contributing and this year we’re stop 82!

We usually do a mini-hunt: this one features lovely, pirate themed props and accessories!

We have eight gifts staged throughout our Pirate Lair (created exclusively for this hunt!) on the skylevel of NeoVictoria SIM.

Our skylevel is always out-of-character (OOC), so hunters won’t disrupt the roleplay.

Here’s the list:

Large “Wooden” Mesh Beams
Use it as a prop: add sits or place for visual appeal. Perfect to a pirate’s lair or a warehouse picnic.
A magical sphere with a pulsing heart. Perfect as a beacon to guide friendlies to your private lair or resize to use a desk l
Six barrels of ale stacked on a wooden base. Perfect as décor for your pirate bar or dock.
Based on the historic streetlamps of Brighton England, this original mesh creation is perfect for your Victorian or Steampunk builds!
The finest ale, barrel sized. Perfect for your pirate ship or bar.
Comes in standard mesh sizes, fits mesh bodies with the use of alpha hud.
The NeoVictoria Steamhunt Commemorative Calendar returns!

A special thank you to MadMechMessiah and Paisley Dawes for producing this event, and to contributors Studio Yue and Ava Bloodrose Delaney for their generous gifts!

NeoLondon Times ~ Volume 28 Special Edition

A Royal Visit

21 September 2137
NeoLondon, planet NeoVictoria

The NeoLondon Times has learned that Captain Gwyddien ap Glyndwr of the Tuatha de Danaan will visit NeoLondon to honor the anniversary of his sister’s death in the Battle of Green Well, which occurred during the Strand Wars.  His sister was Arianrhod ap Glyndwr and wife to our own Lord Bowley.  Lady Bowley is interred in the crypt in the graveyard of the Cathedral of Air and Darkness.

Captain Gwyddien ap Glyndwr of the Tuatha de Danaan

Captain Glyndwr has a storied history in the royal court as a fierce warrior and a talented skinwalker. His most well-known victory was at the Battle of the Trees, one of the key conflicts of the Sidhe civil war.  There he fought against the sons of Don, enchanting the elementary trees and sedges to rise up as warriors against Don’s forces. The alder led the attack, while the aspen fell in battle, and heaven and earth trembled before the great oaks, who were memorialized as a valiant door keeper against the enemy. To this day, he wears their bones as his mantle.

Lady Bowley

Captain Glyndwr has not visited NeoVictoria for many years.  However, his retinue has already transformed Bowley castle to support his stay.  We expect the Captain to arrive, via airship, on Tuesday morning. His public schedule may be found below.

  • Tuesday, 22 September: The Captain Arrives
    Start: 11 AM, SL-time
    Cathedral of Air and Darkness
  • Wednesday, 23 September: Attending the Grave
    Start: 10 AM, SL-Time
Cemetery, Cathedral of Air and Darkness
  • Friday, 25 September: Party at the Castle
    Start: 4 PM, SL-time
The Captain hosts a party at Bowley castle.
  • Saturday, 26 September: The Charmed Hunt
    Start: Noon, SL-time
The Captain organizes a hunt near the Solstice fairgrounds.

All citizens are invited to attend these public events!

The Decimation of Greenwell

[From the archives of the NeoLondon Times]
1 January 840 AD
Planet Greenwell, Strand Republic

Today, the Queen’s forces made great strides toward victory when they defeated all opposing forces on the planet Greenwell and rendered the planet uninhabitable. Now, void of life, it stands as a monument and warning to those who would oppose our beloved Empire.

A scene from the battle

One soldier (who wished to remain anonymous) provided us the details. “The battle was goin poorly …very poorly …we were bein pushed back by them bloody fuckin golems.  Then we got word that the Soul Casters from the Medical Corp was gonna take the field.  Well, you know things are rightly fucked when your bloody healers take the battlefield.  We were given these charms … talisman they were called … and told ta keep ‘em with us at all times!  The next thing we knew, the fucking grass shot up like iron spears, striking the golems straight up their arses to their noses!  The ground started shaking, fire and brimstone erupted …it was bloody chaos. Then the blasted sky turned black!  How the fuck does that happen!?  So many screams from the machines, but not one of us was touched!  Those talisman worked!  Remind me not to piss off those damn bloody soul casters …bloody hell!”

The success of the Talisman Project notwithstanding, there were still heavy casualties to our Majesty’s army. Nearly 500,000 soldiers lost their lives in a series of battles which lasted ten days.  The medical corps lost 75% of their soul casters, almost 10,000 dead.  Most lost their lives activating and controlling the rune-staves that brought such glorious destruction to the enemy.  At the writing of this article, many of the remaining soulcasters remain in critical condition, but are expected to survive.  We are pleased to report that Lieutenant Colonel Katherine Foxtrotter, who conceived and led the Talisman Project, has survived and received a field promotion to full Colonel for her part in the ritual.

Death of Lady Bowley

[From the archives of the NeoLondon Times]
15 January 840 AD
Planet Greenwell, Strand Republic

It is with great regret we report the death of Captain Arianrhod ap Glyndwr of the Tuatha de Danaan, wife to Lord Joseph Bowley, the Governor of planet NeoVictoria. Captain Glyndwr Bowley died as a result of wounds sustained during the Battle of Greenwell.

Captain Glyndwr Bowley was the only casualty of her sub-unit of 120 soldiers, which she led to victory through the ten-day siege of the planet.  The details of her death are somewhat obscured.  What we do know is she was without her talisman when the soul casters released the full-force of their rune-craft against The Strand golems.  Some have reported that she refused to wear the talisman, while others report that she gave hers to one of her human soldiers who had lost theirs in the battle.

Going to the Battle

Here is what we do know.  While she was attended by soul casters, they were unable to secure her spirit to a soul cage, so she is lost to us forever.  Lord Bowley has announced a crypt will be constructed in the graveyard of the Cathedral of Air and Darkness and his wife’s remains will be interred there.  We will announce that date, as soon as it is known.

Our sincerest sympathies go to the Bowley and Glyndwr families for this most grievous loss.
